There’s nothing better than a crisp fall day. And what better way to top off a crisp fall day than with a cozy fall cocktail or mocktail. This muddled apple cider cocktail recipe is spicy, warm, vibrant, and crisp — the perfect combination for a brisk day.
Muddled Apple Cider Ingredients
The primary ingredients in this recipe are apples, apple cider, bourbon, and lemon juice. Apple and bourbon pair well together–but the bourbon is optional. Lemon juice brightens the drink and allows the spice to shine. I added muddled apples to this drink recipe to create freshness and depth. And maple syrup rounds out the fall flavors. Using my spiced whipped cream takes this drink to a whole other level.
Cider Cocktail Serving Suggestions
One of the fun features of this cocktail is the option to serve it warm. Warming this drink allows the bourbon to permeate the muddled apple, infusing its rich flavors into the mix. To serve it warm, simply start by muddling a fresh apple with a dash of bourbon and lemon juice. Top it with the remaining bourbon and set aside. Heat the remaining ingredients in a saucepan on low heat until warm, then pour them into your muddling glass. It’s like a cozy, liquid blanket on a chilly evening. The warm version kind of begs to be topped with whipped cream. Of course, I think the cold version does too!
The Perfect Topping for this Apple Cider Cocktail
As mentioned, a dollop of spiced whipped cream completes the cocktail’s presentation and adds an extra layer of flavor to the spiced muddled apple cider. If you choose to do without the whipped cream, make sure to add a pinch of cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg to your drink for extra flavor. Or you could use a spiced apple cider.
Variations to Muddle for the Season
If you’re feeling adventurous, try seasonal variations. Pear would do well in this drink. As winter approaches, consider replacing the muddled apple with pickled or preserved cranberries, a spoonful of pumpkin puree, or an orange slice.
Batch Muddled Apple Cider Punch/Mocktails
You can multiply the ingredients of this recipe to make a large batch of this to serve at your next fall get-together. Do warn your guests — this drink will sneak up on you in a surreptitious way — it goes down quickly and the bourbon can pack a punch. For a lighter cocktail, take an ounce of bourbon. Or leave out the alcohol for a mocktail. Without the alcohol, kids love helping muddle, measure, and pour.
Take some time this fall and winter to make yourself this special treat. You’ll be glad you did!
